The attar distillery at Kannauj

Our Conviction

India has been the source
for a thousand years.
We are the name.

The Brief

Why this. Why now.

Every perfume house has an origin story. Most of them involve a family, a formula, or a city. Ours involves a question: why has India — home to the world's finest sandalwood, the origin of oud, the inventors of attar distillation — never produced a fragrance house that the world knows by name?

We did not have a good answer. So we decided to become one.

Mitti Attar

Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh

The town of Kannauj has been producing attar through steam distillation for six hundred years. Mitti — the petrichor attar, the literal smell of rain striking hot earth — is produced nowhere else in the world. It is India's most singular fragrance material and its most overlooked.

Hindi Oud

Assam

Aquilaria agallocha, the tree that produces Indian oud, grows in the forests of Assam. Its oil — Hindi oud — is considered by serious perfumers to be the world's most complex oud: layered, precise, deeply dignified. It has been sold as raw material to Arabic houses for decades. We decided that ends here.

Kashmir Saffron

Pampore, Kashmir

The saffron fields of Pampore produce the most aromatic saffron in the world — GI-certified, hand-harvested, priced at over ₹1,50,000 per kilogram. In fragrance it brings a dry metallic warmth unlike any other material. Nobody had built a modern, internationally-minded eau de parfum around it before Ember.

Provenance is not a story we tell. It is the formula.

2025

ARKEN Olfactive was founded in New Delhi in 2025 with a simple position: the materials the world's great perfumes are built on come from India — and deserved a house built to an international standard.

A collection built on the scent profiles the world already loves — each one remade around a rare Indian material at its centre, not its edges. Formulated for confidence, not seduction. Priced to be owned, not gifted once and forgotten.

This is the beginning.

The Nose

Composed by hand, in India.

ARKEN is composed in-house, in India, by a perfumer trained between Grasse and Mumbai who chose to come home to the materials. No outsourced brief, no borrowed formula — every fragrance takes a profile the world already loves and rebuilds it around a real Indian material the original only gestured at.

The method is deliberate: a high load of naturals, heavy fixatives chosen to hold in Indian heat, and a full maceration before anything is bottled. The science is not hidden behind the romance. It is the romance.

“I don’t build accords to hide the material. I build them to introduce it.”

The Founders

We did not set out to make perfume. We set out to build the international house these materials always deserved. India has been the source for centuries; we are the name on the bottle.
