Agarwood from upper Assam — the resin the tree makes only where it has been wounded — held ten weeks against Kashmir saffron, Turkish rose and Mysore sandalwood. The saffron opens dry and faintly metallic; the oud arrives at about twenty minutes and does not leave.

The material
Aquilaria agallocha
An unremarkable evergreen until it is injured. Infected heartwood floods itself with a dark resin, and that resin distilled is oud. The Assamese grade is the quietest of them.

How it behaves
Saffron and bergamot, dry and slightly metallic over the wood beneath.
The oud opens: resinous, warm, faintly sweet, with rose and nutmeg holding its edges.
Sandalwood, patchouli and amber. A second skin that carries into the next day.
